Freelance illustration market is first of all huge. You have to understand that every ad agency and magazine always hires illustrators to work on specific projects and contracts. And if you make a list of how many ad agencies and magazines are out there, your list is going to be very long! This is exciting and encouraging at the same time.
The major clients that usually commission freelance illustration are book publishers, magazines and ad agencies. Again, if you want to be more specific, book publishers that deal with children books tent to hire illustrators on a frequent basis. As books for adults are not so often illustrated. Magazines hire illustrators monthly as every month a new issue comes out and certain articles require illustrations.
