Hi Daria, my name is Jennifer from Switzerland. I am a big fan of illustrators who really make it in the industry. Could you describe how to be an illustrator, in other words how does illustration career really work?
Illustration career is awesome and I am very happy that I made this decision years back to become an illustrator. This profession is very creative and interesting. I would definitely suggest you guys and gals who are interested in becoming an illustrator to go first to an illustration school. Just being surrounded by the environment helps a lot in your personal growth and you will learn a lot of tips on how to be an illustrator as teachers will show you a lot of different techniques and mediums. After learning different art techniques, you will have a big choice in front of you that will help you to define your illustration style in the future.
You might be asking, but how to be an illustrator if I don’t want to go to school? Well let me tell you that it’s all possible. All you need is a passion for illustration and drawing. Once you have that, you are half way there. You don’t need to go to an illustration school, it’s just my suggestion. You can learn how to be an illustrator on your own.
Illustration career is usually based on freelance and I love it. It gives freedom to travel around the world and gives you flexibility in your lifestyle.

Illustration is a very competitive field, you need to know specific details about the industry in order to breakthrough the competition and I am here for you to teach you what steps you need to take.
So my answer on how to be an illustrator is simple.
Be passionate. Try to find a good illustration school OR learn a few techniques and mediums. Get inspired and write what are your dream clients? For who would you like to illustrate?
Is it for fashion magazines? Advertising agencies and luxury brands? Children’s books? Fantasy? the choice is limitless, so you need a focus.
Be persistent. When you start your career, it doesn’t matter in what field you are in, all you need is knowledge and then get more experience. The same goes for illustration! You start by first accumulating knowledge on illustration techniques, mediums, business of illustration and then once you start having clients, your experiences starts piling up! More experience you have, easier everything becomes.
